BOSTON — Neighbors in one East Boston community say they’re fed up with an ongoing rat problem they believe is only getting worse. Now, they’re walking the neighborhood calling on city leaders for action.
Liane Sherman tells Boston 25 she’s lived in the neighborhood for over 30 years. “This is an oddity for us we’ve never seen it like this before,” said Sherman.
On Thursday, dozens of residents did a rat walk-through organized by City Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata’s office. This comes after hearing of rodent concerns in the East Boston neighborhood.
Zapata tells Boston 25 rodent activity is a serious quality of life issue. In a prepared statement Zapata tells Boston 25 News, “Rodent activity is a serious quality-of-life issue, and today’s walkthrough was about listening to residents and identifying solutions on the ground. We’re grateful to the neighbors who came out and to ISD for responding quickly. Our office will continue working with City departments, Massport, and property owners to address the conditions contributing to rodent activity and ensure the concerns raised today result in real action, not just another walkthrough.”
“It is a sanitation issue and we have a lot of kids on our street they shouldn’t have to play in an area where rats are running around it’s just not sanitary or safe. I realize it’s happening all over East Boston, Bettington Street has reported a whole bunch of rats in that area as well,” Sherman tells Boston 25 News.
