‘Horrible experience’: Peabody mail carrier robbed at gunpoint says suspect threatened to shoot him

PEABODY, Mass. — A North Shore mail carrier robbed at gunpoint told Boston 25 News that the suspect threatened to shoot him if he didn’t hurry up and hand over his keys to the Postal Boxes.

It happened just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on Veterans Memorial Drive near Lynn Street in Peabody.

The mail carrier, who doesn’t want his name published, said he’s been delivering mail for nearly 28 years. He said he’s never felt intimidated on the job before and called what happened a “horrible experience”.

Despite having a gun pointed in his face, he said he plans to return to his normal route.

“He’s a nice guy,” said neighbor Richard Campbell. “It’s people who don’t want to work. They just want to take advantage of somebody.”

Campbell’s home security cameras captured the violent ambush from multiple angles.

“You can clearly hear the postman pleading to get his keys back and that he has a route to finish,” explained Campbell. “They came for the keys so they can open the blue boxes, take the box out of the bottom with the mail and close the Post Box back up so it doesn’t look strange to everyone.”

The mail carrier told Boston 25 News that the suspect appeared to be a “young kid”.

He said he had seen the suspect in the neighborhood shortly before the armed robbery.

“He’s such a sweet guy,” said another neighbor, referring to the mail carrier. “I’m thankful that nothing happened to him.”

The suspect is described as an African American male in his 20′s with a skinny build, approximately 5′08″ in height.

He was wearing a puffy black jacket with a yellow hoodie and a blue face mask.

Police said the suspect fled the scene in a Grey Honda and was last seen heading in the direction of Lynn.
