CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — An arrest has been made in connection with a series of break-ins at Harvard University dorm rooms.
Harvard University Police Department sent out a campus-wide email Thursday morning stating they arrested a male suspect on a burglary charge around 1 a.m. in connection with an unlawful entry that was just reported at Canaday Hall.
An officer said he observed an unidentified male behaving in a suspicious manner around several undergraduate residences. When the officer conducted a field interview with the male he determined that the individual was in fact a suspect in the previous burglaries in Harvard Yard.
Police are investigating two dormitory burglaries in which the victims reported someone had climbed through their first-floor windows while they were sleeping and stole their valuables.
“Upon further investigation, the individual will be charged in two of the four previous burglaries occurring in freshman dorms between February 19th and March 2nd,” said Harvard police.
In the community advisory released last Friday, police said the incidents over the past week had happened at first-year dorms, Mower and Wigglesworth Halls.
Stolen items included laptops, Air Pods, a backpack and wallet.
“It’s very disturbing… It’s a little concerning,” said student Sraavya Sambara. “Making sure to lock my windows and stuff.”
Police are urging students to keep windows closed and locked and not to prop open doors or hold doors open for strangers.
“Just keeping everything down, everything locked,” said first-year student Jay Hong Chew of the precautions he is taking. “My roommates and I haven’t lifted up our curtains for about a week now since the incident happened, and I don’t think we plan to anytime soon.”
