BOSTON — Get the Guinness and whiskey ready, St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and Boston has just been ranked as the best city for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Surprisingly, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with parades didn’t originate in Ireland, but instead started and became popular in North American colonies centuries ago.

More than 31 million people in the U.S. claim Irish ancestry – that’s more than six times the population of Ireland. This year, it’s estimated that Americans will spend $6.85 billion on the green Holiday.

According to a new report from WalletHub, Boston has been ranked as the Best City for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Boston received a score of 66.9. Philly came in 2nd place and Chicago known for dying the Chicago River green came in third as the best city to celebrate.

Here’s how Boston rated on Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Boston (1=Best, 100=Avg.):

  • 8th – % of Irish Population
  • 4th – Irish Pubs & Restaurants per Capita
  • 61st – Access to Bars
  • 90th – DUI Fatalities per Capita
  • 80th – Weather Forecast for St. Patrick’s Day
  • 101st – Lowest Price for Three-Star Hotel on St. Patrick’s Day
