LYNN, Mass. — Funeral services will be held next week for a beloved Lynn mother who drowned while trying to save one of her children from the water at Franconia Falls in New Hampshire.
The life of Melissa Bagley, 44, will be honored with a wake at Solimine Funeral Home on Aug. 23 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and a funeral Mass will follow at St. John the Evangelist Church on Thursday at 10 a.m., according to Solimine Funeral Homes.
Bagley died during a family outing in the area of the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River in the White Mountain National Forest on Tuesday afternoon. She was a resident of Lynn and the wife of Everett Police Department Lt. Sean Bagley.
Melissa, her husband, and children arrived at the Lincoln Woods trailhead in Lincoln around 1 p.m. with plans to hike to Franconia Falls, according to officials. When they completed the hike, Melissa’s 10-year-old boy slipped and fell into one of the pools at the Falls as they prepared to go for a swim.
The child, trapped in the fast and circulating current of the pool, was unable to get out and Melissa jumped in to help. Melissa encountered trouble as well, prompting two of her other children to jump into the water.
Melissa was later found unresponsive on a rock by her husband, Sean, who performed CPR, but she was unable to be revived.
Since her tragic death, tributes have poured in, including many touching posts on Solimine Funeral Home’s website.
“You were such an inspiration to mothers and women alike. We will miss you so much and we know you will be a guardian Angel to your family forever,” one person wrote on Melissa’s tribute wall.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family pay for funeral costs.
