BOSTON — Beth Radcliffe is a nurse in Boston and sometimes works overnight shifts.
‘I just took an Uber yeah. If you work weird hours like I do — shift work — you have to take them,” said Radcliffe.
Radcliffe says Uber is a must for her especially with the recent MBTA construction going on.
“It’s kind of inevitable taking an Uber especially with all the work they’ve been doing on the trains and stiff you can’t rely on them.”
She was unaware a former Uber driver with multiple sexual assault charges dating back to 2017 was just arrested.
William Mancortes, 43, was taken into custody by police in Boston and Milton.
According to police, the one-time Uber driver from Hyde Park used his position to lure women and then sexually assault them.
Boston 25 obtained documents that spell out some of his alleged crimes. They include:
- One victim was a Northeastern student assaulted after leaving a Boston bar.
- Another victim was walking across the Massachusetts Avenue bridge and got into what she thought was an Uber and was then attacked.
Radcliffe is concerned but says she has a safety plan in place when she takes an Uber.
“You try to take it with people if you can and I have my location shared with a few close friends and my parents,” she said.
Mancortes is off the streets for now.
In the meantime, Radcliffe says while deeply concerning for women, his story is not uncommon.
“There are crazy people out there you hear these stories more often than not — growing up in this day and age we are pretty used to that so unfortunately it’s like a reality.”
Uber did release a statement which says in part:
These allegations are atrocious, and the suspect was banned from the Uber platform years ago. We take reports of this nature very seriously and cooperated with law enforcement on their investigation.
Mancortes is set to be arraigned at Boston Municipal Court on Monday.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
