‘Everybody was just devastated’: Community mourning loss of Sherborn teen killed in boat crash

DOVER, Mass — A local community is in shock after learning a Dover-Sherborn high school student and star lacrosse player was killed this weekend in a boating accident on the Cape.

State Police say Sadie Mauro and five other people were on a boat when it crashed into a jetty in Dennis around 9 PM Friday. Dive teams recovered Sadie’s body hours later.

The 17-year-old was a rising senior.

“She never took herself too seriously, she had a great sense of humor. She was always flipping something from a negative to a positive,” said Leslie Frank, one of Sadie’s lacrosse coaches at Mass Elite Lacrosse.

Sadie joined the club team at Mass Elite Lacrosse about 5 years ago.

Frank says Sadie’s age group had a tournament Sunday after learning the tragic news.

“Everybody was just devastated, it was hard for them to even take the field, so we gave them extra time to hang out and talk and just talk about, you know, what she meant to us,” said Frank.

Frank says Sadie was a standout player, a team leader, with the most positive attitude.

“She just had that kind of glow and ease about her, she was really funny and really just comfortable and hardworking,” said Frank.

The principal at Dover-Sherborn High School sent a letter to families this weekend saying in part:

“Our school community is devastated and heartbroken.

Sadie’s smile could light up a room, she had a heart of gold and the sweetest spirit. She had such a strong sense of self and had a love for adventure and anything outdoors. A hardworking student and great athlete, Sadie was genuine and effortlessly kind.”

Those who knew her hope to carry on her memory for years to come.

“I think in the long run we’ll definitely honor her in some way that we can,” said Frank. “We do a lot of charity events at our tournaments or drives over the holidays and we’re definitely going to do something with Sadie Mauro.”

Dover-Sherborn school leaders will have a crisis response team with grief counselors available Monday at the high school library from 10AM until noon for anyone needing that extra support during this difficult time.
