Driver suffers life-threatening injuries in rollover crash that shut down I-93 in Medford

MEDFORD, Mass — A driver suffered life-threatening injuries in a rollover crash that shut down Interstate 93 in Medford early Friday morning.

Emergency crews responding to a report of a crash on the southbound side of the highway near Roosevelt Circle after 3 a.m. found a mangled vehicle resting next to the guardrail.

State police shut down both sides of the highway and a medical helicopter landed near the scene of the crash. The victim, whose name has not been released, was flown to an area hospital.

Video from the scene showed several firefighters working to free the driver from the wreckage.

Traffic was detoured off the highway at Exit 24, but the northbound lanes reopened just before 4 a.m. and southbound side reopened just after 6:00 a.m.

Officials warned motorists of heavy traffic delays through the morning commute.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
