Concord, NH man, 77, charged with murder of wife

CONCORD, New Hampshire — A 77-year-old man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following the death of his wife, Attorney General John M. Formella announced Friday.

Philip Couture, of Concord, New Hampshire, was arrested after police responded to the couple’s home at 71 S. Spring St. for a reported homicide at approximately 1:45 p.m. Friday, Formella said in a statement.

Officers found Marlene Couture, 78, dead at the home. An autopsy was to be conducted on Saturday.

Philip Couture was charged with second-degree murder “for knowingly causing the death of Ms. Couture by assaulting her, and one count of second-degree murder for recklessly causing the death of Ms. Couture under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life, by assaulting her,” Formella said.

He also faces another charge of second-degree assault for strangling an adult female at the residence. That female was treated for her injuries and released.

Philip Couture is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday, June 1 at Merrimack County Superior Court in Concord.
