BOSTON — The driver of a charter bus involved in a crash on Monday that shut down a major Boston highway is now facing charges in connection with the wreck, authorities announced Tuesday.
The driver of an Academy bus, whose name hasn’t been released, has been cited for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stay within marked lanes, according to a Boston Police Department spokesman.
Video from the scene of the crash on Monday showed the Academy bus with a shattered windshield stopped on the southbound side of Route 1A at 175 William F. McClellan Highway, which carries traffic to the airport.
Boston police said the bus knocked down four light poles and two transformers shortly before 5:45 a.m., leaving wires strewn across the highway in the area of Suffolk Downs.
The bus had several Logan Airport workers on board and two injuries were reported.
As of Tuesday afternoon, one lane on the southbound side of McClellan Highway had been reopened to traffic. The northbound lanes were reopened Monday hours after the crash.
“The street remains partially closed and delays are expected until crews complete repairs,” the department spokesman noted.
The crash resulted in significant traffic delays in East Boston, as well as multiple surrounding communities. Travelers heading to Logan Airport were urged to give themselves plenty of extra commute time.
Police said the officer investigating the crash has also applied for an immediate threat to suspend the bus driver’s license with the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Boston 25 News has reached out to Academy for comment on the charges filed by police. In a statement on Monday, the company said they were cooperating with state and local police.
The crash remains under investigation.
