BOSTON — If you are planning on gassing up the car and heading somewhere else to enjoy this last long holiday weekend of summer, health officials are strongly urging that you think twice about the idea. COVID cases are surging across the United States, 160,000 new cases per day, according to recent data by Johns Hopkins University.
Those who are vaccinated are being asked to use precautions such as mask-wearing if they are traveling, and for those unvaccinated, travel is not recommended.
The warning from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is due to the transmission of COVID-19 of late. In Massachusetts, cases had been on the rise since the week of July 4. Hospitalizations and the seven-day weighted average dipped slightly on Thursday from Wednesday, according to public health data.
Most COVID cases over the past two weeks in the Commonwealth are within the age range between 20-29, with 422 cases per 100,000. Ages 30-39 have 399 cases per 100,000, according to the Department of Public Health.
