BROOKLINE, Mass — Four people were taken to the hospital Thursday after a hazmat situation prompted the evacuation of Brookline High School.

Around 12 p.m., students and staff were ordered out of the building by emergency officials due to a chemical irritant found inside the first-floor bathroom close to the cafeteria, according to Brookline Public Schools.

“Boston Hazmat is also present at the scene to further evaluate the situation. In consultation with emergency and public health officials, we are ending the school day early and dismissing all BHS students and staff at this time,” the school said in a statement.

According to school officials, two students and two staff members were taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment and their families were notified.

As of 3 p.m., Brookline school was “deemed safe” by Public Health in consultation with Boston Hazmat.

“In the event that students or staff are experiencing eye or throat irritation or other respiratory symptoms this afternoon or evening, we recommend you reach out to your healthcare provider,” according to school officials.

In addition, Brookline High School will be open on Friday and classes will resume as scheduled.

All other Brookline Public Schools are not affected.
