Authorities identify man who drowned in Winchester lake

WINCHESTER, Mass. — Authorities have identified a man who drowned in a lake in Winchester on Sunday.

Emergency crews responding to a report of a possible drowning in Upper Mystic Lake off Sandy Beach pulled a man from the water around 4:40 p.m., according to Massachusetts State Police.

The victim, 56-year-old Jose Garcia, of Chelsea, was taken to Winchester Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Garcia was swimming at the lake with family members when another beachgoer noticed that he was in distress in about 35 feet of water.

State police noted that Garcia was past the designated swimming area.

The incident remains under investigation.
