EASTHAM, Mass. — A Massachusetts man is facing several charges after leading police on a pursuit while armed followed by a 30-minute standoff over the weekend, state police said.

Shawn Smalley, 35, of Rochester, is charged with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, a firearm); failure to stop for police, and negligent driving.

No injuries or damage to property were reported.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday, Rochester Police advised State Police to be on the lookout for a 35-year-old man, later identified as Smalley, who reportedly fled his home in a Toyota Tundra “with multiple firearms,” state police said.

Troopers located the Toyota Tundra on Route 28 in Dennis, followed behind it for a brief time, and initiated a traffic stop.

As the Toyota entered a congested area, State Police Command ended the pursuit, and Smalley continued driving along Route 28 towards Harwich.

At that time, state police deployed the Air Wing to follow Smalley from the sky.

As the driver continued east, Orleans Police deployed a tire deflation device that made contact with the Toyota’s front passenger tire, state police said.

The Toyota continued at a low rate of speed for a short time but it eventually became disabled and stopped again.

Smalley abandoned the Toyota in the area of Eves Way and Great Pond Road in Eastham and ran away.

Police chased the man for approximately 100 yards, state police said. A 30-minute standoff ensued, with Smalley pointing a firearm at himself and police.

Troopers and officers deescalated the situation by talking to Smalley, who ultimately surrendered to police.

Officers recovered a pistol and two shotguns, and Smalley was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
