WESTFIELD, Mass. — A 21-year-old man from Plymouth was killed in a crash on Route 90 in Westfield on Monday afternoon, state police said.

Troopers responded to calls reporting a multiple-vehicle crash on Route 90 near the 39.6 mile marker at approximately 3:10 p.m., state police said.

A preliminary investigation found that three vehicles were involved in a crash in the left lane of Route 90 Westbound while in heavy traffic.

The vehicles included a 2019 Toyota Rav4 driven by a 36-year-old woman, a 2017 Ford Super duty pick-up driven by a 57-year-old man, and a 2005 Nissan Altima driven by the 21-year-old man from Plymouth.

Subsequent to that crash a 2003 Peterbilt heavy duty tow truck also traveling in the left lane struck the rear vehicle of the first crash, the Nissan Altima.

The driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released Monday pending notification of next-of-kin.

The driver of the Peterbilt, a 24-year-old man, suffered minor injuries and the driver of the Toyota both suffered minor injuries and were sent by ambulance to Bay State Medical Center.

Police closed off the westbound side of Route 90 for about four hours.

The crash remains under investigation by the State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section and Hampden County Detectives.

Westfield Fire & EMS, the Medical Examiner’s Office and MassDOT assisted at the scene.
