EASTON, Mass. — An 18-year-old is facing charges in connection with the “horrific” shooting of a 16-year-old girl at an Easton apartment complex earlier this month, officials announced Monday.
Anthony Lopes, of Brockton, is facing charges of assault and battery by discharging a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a high-capacity firearm and armed robbery, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.
Officers responding to a report of a shooting at the Avalon apartment complex on Robert Drive around 2:30 p.m. on January 14 found the girl suffering from a serious gunshot wound to her face, Easton police told Boston 25 News.
“It was a horrific scene for the officers involved,” Boone said during a news conference after the shooting.
According to court documents, police noticed a group of men leaving the area, abandoning a black SUV that was traced back to Lopes.
Police later found Lopes near his Brockton home on Battles Farm Drive, walking with his right arm rigidly in his pocket. Police determined it was possible that he was holding a firearm.
Lopes got into another car with men inside that stopped just down the road. When police approached he began to run but tripped, causing a 40-caliber handgun to fall from his pocket. Police then placed him under arrest.
Lopes was arrested on charges of possession of a firearm without a license, possession of a loaded firearm without a license and possessing a large capacity feeding device without a license but did not have charges formally levied against him for the brazen attack as investigators worked to gather a “substantial collection of evidence.”
The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital before being flown to a Boston-area hospital. Her injuries were initially reported as life-threatening but she was later upgraded to being in stable condition.
Lopes will be arraigned in Taunton District Court on Monday afternoon.
