Local teens eating seeds that cause hallucinations

SEEKONK, Mass. — School officials are warning parents about a trend that involves students eating seeds that cause hallucinations.  Recently, the seeds were discovered on Seekonk school property.

"I would have had no idea. I wouldn't have even thought,” Jeff Seyboth said.

Seyboth works at J&J Gardening Center and after 30 years in the businesses says this is the first time he has had to remove a product because it was used to get high.

"You have enough when you deal with the outside elements and cold and rain, climate. You have enough to worry about than worry about kids buying a seed,” he said.

The plant seeds, Sleepy Grass, Hawaiian Baby Woodrose, and Blue Morning Glory, all contain d-lysergic acid amide (LSA). LSA closely resembles LSD and can cause auditory and visual hallucinations when ingested. The side effects include nausea and vomiting.

Over the past few weeks, police in Somerset say at least one student has been hospitalized after ingesting the seeds at a party.

The Home Depot in Somerset has removed the seeds from their store, but police warn that the seeds may still be sold at other locations.

"They're bought a lot of different places. If your child's not into gardening and flowers and you see these kid of flower seeds it should be a tip off you might want to look into that,” Seekonk Police Capt. Frank John said.

Anyone with information about how the seeds got onto Seekonk school property is urged to contact Seekonk Police.
