Hyde Park YMCA camp counselor accused of physically restraining child

HYDE PARK, Mass. - The Department of Children and Families has launched an investigation into the Hyde Park YMCA after a camp counselor was accused of physically restraining a child.

Families who frequent the YMCA said they don't know what could have prompted this investigation, but are now anxious to find out what will happen.

"Nothing is surprising these days," said Leiba Hospedales. "I would investigate the situation to find out what really happened [and] take it from there."

The Thomas M. Menino YMCA says that, on July 31, a camp counselor was forced to restrain a young boy who was striking her. The counselor repeatedly took hold of the child's arm to stop him from hitting her and possibly hurting others or himself.

"It's kind of scary, it doesn't look right," said Alton Sanders. "[There] should be more caution and concern in a situation like that."

According to the YMCA, the child's parents were notified and a report was filed with the state. DCF confirms the report was filed, but declined to comment any further.

Some parents say they are worried that there may be information that has not been released.

"I'm very concerned because when you have a kid you don't want this to happen to your kid so it's very inappropriate," said Sanders.

The YMCA states it acted in accordance with its code of conduct and child protection policy and that the health and safety of those it serves remains its top priority.
