M Street beachgoers crowd Southie spot with few masks despite COVID-19 fears

BOSTON — The M Street beach remained crowded Saturday as people found ways to beat the heat.

Katharine from Boston admits that, even though she is concerned about COVID 19, she felt the urge to enjoy this beautiful beach day.

“When we first got here which was before noon it felt fine,” she said. “Even at 2 p.m., I didn’t feel fine, and I was laughing saying we should take a picture and say corona does it even exist? Obviously, it does.”

Whether conflicted or confident, crowds filled up portions of the beach despite fears of a second wave or even making the first wave worse.

“I wasn’t scared at first and then my mom was like ‘Miami, that’s why people got coronavirus,’ and I didn’t even consider that honestly,” said one Brighton resident.

Police came for the same reason as any other beach day, to make sure there were no fights and to make sure there was no one drinking. However, the police were not regulating the health guidelines of wearing masks and social distancing.

“Even when we went by the water, we stood away from people, which I think was definitely at least six feet and it didn’t feel too crowded, even though when you look at it, it looks really crowded,” that Brighton said.

“I’ve been in large crowds previously, like I was part of the protest. So I just try to be as careful as possible [and] not touching anything,” said Dophie Pierre of Brockton “I didn’t wear a mask, but I brought it in case I was super close to someone or in case I needed to go to the store, so I definitely kept that in mind when I came out today.”

Pierre wasn't alone. We found very few people wearing masks, even as the crowds increased throughout the day.

“Wear a mask but here I am not wearing one,” Katharine said. “I think young people are not taking it as seriously as they should and am I included in that? Probably, I guess, unfortunately. Sadly. We keep talking about the second wave in September and this makes me feel like it’s for sure coming so it sad.”

For people who prefer another option instead of the beach, Boston will open up cooling centers Sunday morning.
