BOSTON — Boston City Councilor Matt O’Malley will not seek re-election next year, he announced on social media on Wednesday.

O’Malley, whose district includes the neighborhoods of West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain, parts of Roslindale and Roxbury and the Back of the Hill, said on Twitter that his decision “wasn’t an easy decision to make.”

“It is with an appreciative heart, that I share with you today that I will not be seeking reelection next year,” O’Malley said. “I am incredibly proud of our achievements over the last decade, and profoundly excited about the opportunities that lay ahead for our district. This wasn’t an easy decision to make, but the right one for me and my family. While politics (particularly in Boston) can be rough and tumble, the support and votes of confidence this district has given me time and time again is a lot to walk away from. I am forever grateful. Parenthood offers one helluva perspective. As proud as I am to be called Councilor, being called Dad will be the greatest title I can ever earn.”

O’Malley was elected as the District 6 representative to the Boston City Council in a special election on Nov. 16, 2010. He was reelected to the seat on Nov. 8, 2011 and on Nov. 5, 2013 when he received a record-setting 18,204 votes, according to the City of Boston website.
