Beth Israel: Patient who traveled from Liberia does not have Ebola

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A patient who was brought to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Sunday night after reporting symptoms of the Ebola does not have the virus, according to a statement from the hospital Monday night.

The man, who recently traveled to the US from Liberia, arrived at Harvard Vanguard Medical Center in Braintree Sunday afternoon and said he was experiencing muscle aches as well as a headache.

The building was evacuated briefly and the patient was isolated in an ambulance outside of the hospital, officials say, and then transferred to Beth Israel in Boston.

"Our evaluation is now complete and we have determined with certainty the patient does not have Ebola Virus Disease. The patient remains in good condition," the hospital's statement read, in part, Monday night.

The patient was transported to Beth Israel in Boston by privately owned Brewster Ambulance service. Training and education director Jeff Jacobson says its something the company had been training for.

It was the first public Ebola scare in Massachusetts, but we know there have been others that did not make the news.

Dr. Anita Barry, the head of the infectious disease bureau for the city of Boston said in a news conference Monday all of the three to four suspected cases so far have turned out to be other illnesses, including malaria and Typhoid fever.

She stressed Ebola is not transmitted through casual contact, and is spread "through direct contact with blood or other body fluids."
