(MyFoxBoston.com) -- Gmail users are being warned Thursday after millions of usernames and passwords were hacked and listed on a Russian website.
The website is a forum devoted to Bitcoin security. The leak became public after a user posted a link to the list on reddit.com.
Nearly 5 million accounts have been hacked. If authentic, the leaked passwords would not only give someone who uses it access to Gmail, but also other Google services like Google Drive and Google Wallet.
A spokeswoman for Google says they are aware of the security breach, and though officials at the company do not believe the list to be very accurate.
According to a
report, cyber security experts believe that while much of the data appears to be real, the list of usernames and passwords could be years old, and likely is information from from previous compromised sources, not Google's servers.
Google is urging everyone to change their passwords, and encouraging users to begin using Google's "
" process for stronger password protection.
