Girlfriend of Whitey Bulger pleads guilty to contempt

BOSTON — Longtime girlfriend of Boston mobster Whitey Bulger could spend the rest of her life in prison after pleading guilty to criminal contempt Wednesday.

Catherine Greig refused to testify to a grand jury about the whereabouts of Bulger during his years on the run and who helped them. Despite facing life in prison, she refused to divulge any secrets of her years on the run with one of the FBI's Most Wanted fugitives.

Greig refused a jury trial for the charge and instead pleaded guilty. There is no statutory maximum penalty for criminal contempt and she could receive life in prison at the sentencing date. There is also no limit on the fine imposed.

Outside court, her lawyer refused to divulge why Greig is refusing to talk.

"I won't get into any reasons as to why, I think it's readily apparent that she is just not. It's not something, you can abuse her, or put her in jail, and threaten her with more jail or more contempt," said Kevin Reddington told FOX25's Bob Ward.

The brother of a Bulger victim said he thinks the reason is simple she's not talking - money. There are supposedly millions of dollars still hidden away belonging to Bulger and herself.
