Georgetown police create safe space for Craigslist transactions

GEORGETOWN, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Craigslist is convenient, but it can also be dangerous. As we reported Tuesday, a person was attacked in Arlington after meeting up with someone for a Craigslist transaction. Due to an uptick in these crimes, several local police departments have been trying to come up with a way to make the transactions safer.

It's a crime on the rise with the times as people are being victimized while meeting up to make purchases arranged online.

We told you Tuesday night about the attack in Arlington where a man was tied up and robbed. His car was even stolen after making a Craigslist connection online.

The Georgetown police chief says there's been a "dramatic increase" when it comes to these crimes and to try to combat it, the department created an online safe zone.

"So we created two parking spaces and we put some cameras on our building," the police chief said.

The spots are just feet away from the police department being monitored 24 hours a day. FOX25 learned it's a trend, and spreading across our state with similar spots set up in Yarmouth, Chelmsford and soon Bedford. Police believe it will deter people from making fraudulent transactions or robbing a customer.
