METHUEN, Mass. — The Powerball jackpot now stands at $1.5 billion, but could the place where you buy your tickets affect your chances of winning?
FOX25 dug through two years of data and found that some stores in the state have winning luck year after year.
Village Square Convenience in Chelmsford has had two huge winners in the past six months.
“First one is $5 million and a couple of weeks ago $4 million,” the store’s manager told FOX25.
Ted’ Satellite Mobil in Methuen had 31 jumbo payouts, the most in the state. They have paid out more than $11 million in prizes since 2014.
"Every time I come in here, I hear people hitting $1 million, like $10,000. It's insane," one customer told FOX25.
Coming in second was Tedeschi’s on Neponset Ave in Dorchester with 29 prizes, followed by Dick’s Variety North in Salisbury with 26 prizes. Tedeschi’s on Beacon Street in Lawrence had 19 and Skelley’s Stateline Mobile in Haverhill with 17 to round out the top five.
One pattern FOX25 noticed was that four of the stores are near the New Hampshire border. The state line is one the edge of the parking lot at Dick’s Variety.
The owners told FOX25 that they get more customers from New Hampshire because the prizes are bigger on both the instant and drawing games. Also, New Hampshire does not have Keno.
The Lottery stats also show the stores with the highest sales volume have the most winners. The top three – Ted’s, Tedeschi’s, and Dick’s Variety, ranked as the top three for the most lottery sales in the state.
