Firefighters knock down 5-alarm fire at cement facility in Wakefield

WAKEFIELD, Mass. — Firefighters from Wakefield and surrounding towns responded to a fire on New Salem Road on Friday morning.

Calls reporting the fire came in at around 3:00 a.m.

The 5-alarm fire happened at a cement company and crews had to be careful due to propane inside.

The Wakefield Fire Chief Mike Sullivan said they initially had trouble accessing water lines and as a result, several blocks of the neighborhood were blocked off.

They contained the flames and smoke within hours.

Firefighters are still on scene monitoring hot spots.

No injuries were reported.
