Fire breaks out at historic Rollins School in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Mass. — Crews were busy Saturday night knocking down a fire at the Rollins School in Lawrence.

Firefighters said the fire started around 6:00 - no one was inside at the time.

Two firefighters were injured while fighting the fire - the department said one firefighter got a nail in their arm, and another was hit by a brick. They believe both of those happened while firefighters were tearing down a wall.

The sprinklers in the school were able to contain the flames to the attic.

Officials said the fire was hard to know down because of the icy conditions, and because of the height of the building.

Some animals in the school were removed from the building, and have been given to teachers and parents to take care of.

The Rollins School was built in 1892. It has been on the Historic Registry since 2000.

Officials estimate between $300,000 - $500,000 worth of damage - they said most of that is water damage.
