WEYMOUTH, Mass. — The family of a 15-year-old Weymouth girl killed in a serious car crash Saturday night is mourning the loss of their "quick witted and bubbly" sister and daughter.
Kate McCarthy was in a car that crashed into a telephone pole late Saturday night in Weymouth. Kate was ejected from the vehicle as it crashed into someone’s front yard; neighbors rushed out to help her before an ambulance arrived. She later died at a nearby hospital.
In a statement, her family said they are trying to make sense of their tragic loss.
"Kate was a ray of sunshine and happiness. She was blessed with beauty that ran inside and out. She had so many friends because she was kind to everyone. Quick witted and funny, her impersonations kept us laughing. She was bubbly. Kate was thoughtful and loved her family so much - brothers, Connor and Liam, and her many cousins with whom she spent vacations, particularly summers on Cape Cod. She loved her Mimi and Papa and was so good to Nana. Kate went to Arch Bishop Williams and was an honor roll student. She was her Dad's Angel Face and they spent hours together working out, going on runs and walks and just doing errands. She loved her special girl time with her mom shopping and just hanging together. Kate really loved school and played on varsity volleyball and lacrosse, ran track, and sang in the chorus. She was so talented and made an impact on everyone."
Kate's classmates voiced many similar sentiments Sunday, as they mourned the loss of their friend.
"A bright light has gone out in our world - such an impact on the world. Even Pope Francis prayed for her at a special mass on Tuesday. So many lives shattered," said her family.
The sophomore played three sports and sang in the school choir. She loved country music and was cherished by her large extended family, including many cousins, aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in her memory may be made to the Kate McCarthy Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Weymouth Bank, 51 Columbian St., So. Weymouth, MA 02190.
