Family friend remembers pair who died in Quincy crash

QUINCY, Mass. — We are learning more about the two men killed in a horrific crash in Quincy. A father and a grandfather both died.

Police still don't know why the driver missed the turn and ended up underneath a pedestrian ramp. A Ford Taurus crashed after police say the driver missed a turn, slamming into part of the Neponset Bridge in Quincy Thursday.

The driver, 74-year-old Paul Onorato, and his passenger, 50-year-old John Gill, died instantly. Friends of the victims’ family say they don’t want the men remembered just by the horrific way they died.

"We called him Papa Smurf," said Aurora Erraoui, a family friend. "He was an intricate part of the family because he took care of everybody."

Onorato was a hair stylist in Weymouth.

"He helped so many people and was such a joy and pleasure to be around," Erraoui said.

Gill dated Onorato’s daughter and they had a son named Jonathon together.

"Johnathon lost both a father and grandfather," said Erraoui.

Police are still investigating what led up to the crash.

"It hurts because he was always a good driver," Erraoui said of Onorato.

A GoFundMe has been started to help the family of one of the deceased. It can be found here.
