Victims identified after elderly couple dies in Worcester single-car crash

An elderly couple was killed in a single-car crash in Worcester, police say.

Worcester Police responded to a report of the crash on Barry Road on Wednesday at 2:42 p.m., after being told two people were trapped in a vehicle.

The two people in the car, an 87-year-old man and 82-year-old woman, were transported to a nearby hospital before passing away due to the trauma from the crash.

The victims were identified as 82-year-old Joan Barringer and 87-year-old Walter Barringer of Worcester.

The couple lived nearby where the crash occurred.

Neighbors told investigators that the woman was driving on Lynnwood Lane when they heard a loud screeching sound coming from the car.

The witnesses saw the car driving on the opposite side of the road before hitting road cones and speed into a stop sign on Barry Road.

The car continued across the road before traveling onto the curb and into a large boulder in a front yard on the road.

The car had extensive front end damage, and neighbors say it appeared the two victims were both unconscious and trapped inside.

Neighbors were forced to smash out a rear window as the car began to smoke, and attempted to help the couple while others sprayed water on the car until Worcester firefighters arrived.

The names of the victims have yet to be released.
