MALDEN, Mass. (AP) — State education officials have approved new charter schools in Brockton and Springfield and the expansion of existing ones in Boston and Everett.

The votes Tuesday by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education come as charter school advocates push to ease existing state caps on the schools. Officials estimate that about 34,000 children are on charter school waiting lists.

The board approved the New Heights Charter School in Brockton, which will serve 735 children in grades 6-12, and Libertas Academy Charter School in Springfield, which will open its doors to 630 children in grades 6-12.

The Edward Brooke and Neighborhood House charter schools in Boston were given the green light to add high school grades, and the Pioneer Charter School in Everett was approved to add children in grades K-6.
