Donald Trump holds town hall in Portland

PORTLAND, Maine — Coming off a rough campaign week, Donald Trump softened his words about the Republican leadership at a Town Hall in Maine Thursday.

Most of the seats were full at Merrill Auditorium, and there were plenty of boos, jeers and chants of USA from the crowd.

Speaking to the large crowd, Trump doubled down on a claim that he saw video of an American shipment of cash to Iran, something his campaign has contradicted.

“You know what’s interesting, because a tape was made. You saw that right, with an airplane coming in. Nice plane. The airplane coming. And the money coming off, I guess? That was given to us – has to be – by the Iranians,” he said.

Trump repeated that Hillary Clinton could not be trusted with national security, said he'd stop immigration from what he calls terrorist nations, and then used the Boston Marathon bombers as examples.

"Through the political asylum process, right?” he said.

Trump is coming off a rough week, arguably one of the worst of his campaign. He has faced blowback after his criticism of the parents of a Muslim soldier killed in Iraq. He’s also been critical of party leaders Paul Ryan and John McCain.

In Maine, he softened his words about the Republican leadership.

“Paul Ryan is a good guy, actually. No, he’s a good guy,” he said.

Trump, again, made a play for Bernie Sanders voters, whom he claims will support him because of his position on trade.

Trump is sticking around New England and is expected to be back in Windham, N.H. on Saturday.
