Dedham principal arrested on OUI charges on leave for remainder of year

DEDHAM, Mass. — A Middle School principal in Dedham has been granted a leave of absence for the rest of the school year after an OUI arrest earlier this month.

Superintendent Michael Welch sent a letter to all parents and staff announcing Debra Gately would be granted a leave of ansence.

Welch said he has been in contect with the principal every day since the arrest.

"On Thursday, April 14 I met with Mrs. Gately and she asked me for a leave of absence for the remainder of the 2015-16 school year in order to provide time and space to step back and address her needs," said Welch in the letter. "I have approved her leave of absence request, and will stay in close touch with her over the next two months."

Welch announced Dr. Margo Fraczek would continue to serve as interim principal for the rest of the year.

Gately was sentenced to one year supervised probation and ordered to complete an alcohol education program. Her license was suspended for 45 days.
