DCF investigating after child walks out of Lowell elementary school unnoticed

LOWELL, Mass. — The Department of Children and Families is looking into how a Lowell boy walked out of the classroom unnoticed.

The incident happened Friday at Pawtucketville Elementary School.

"How does a 7-year-old leave a classroom and the school unnoticed?" the boy’s mother Nicole Jones said.

School leaders told police the first grader asked to use the bathroom, but never returned. Teachers and staff searched classrooms and the school grounds.

"My son is very smart, but he does have impulsive tendencies and I think that's kind of exactly what this decision was,” Jones said.

The boy was found a half-mile away, just starting his 3-mile walk home, his mother said.

A letter from Assistant Superintendent Jeannine M. Durkin said the procedures around when a child goes missing are being reviewed.

"Whatever needs to be done to make sure that this doesn't happen again is, that's all I want,” Jones said.
