Dad: Teen's death caused by brain hemorrhage

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) - The father of a 16-year-old Mass. high school student who died unexpectedly after collapsing at field hockey practice says his daughter succumbed to a brain hemorrhage.

Matthew Dunne told The Boston Globe his daughter, Casey, a junior at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, had no pre-existing medical conditions he knew of.

Headmaster of the school, Robert Henderson said, "She just collapsed. It was that simple."

Casey was suffering, suddenly, from a massive brain bleed.

"She was literally standing in line for a drill after hanging out with some friends before practice began," he said.

He went on to say that everyone acted quickly, but nothing could be done to save her.

"People responded. The coaches took the other players a distance away. Athletic trainers appeared, coaches took care of her," he said.

Mike Dunne, Casey's brother, said, "I'm very happy that she went out in such a happy place, surrounded by people she loved. In a place she loved, doing something that she did love."

Stunned, but determined, Mike and Casey's sister Alexandra are trying to remember their little sister as she lived.

"She was just a bright light in everyone's life. So joyous. So happy all the time," Alexandra said.

The family is holding on to memories of the adventurous middle child of five. Their mom is a trustee at Noble and Greenough and their father is a teacher there. The entire school community is grieving with them.

Visiting hours are Wednesday at the George F. Doherty & Sons funeral home in Wellesley, while a funeral mass is scheduled for Thursday at St. Paul Church.

She is survived by her parents and four siblings.
