BOSTON — Two men in charge of an organization that guides large ships through Boston Harbor are accused of using more than $180,000 of the organization’s money for their own personal benefit.

Gregg Farmer and Andrew Hammond were the executive director and bookkeeper of the Boston Harbor Pilots Association when they allegedly funneled money into their own accounts.

Members of the BHPA are experienced mariners with detailed knowledge of Massachusetts waterways.

The organization is tasked with assisting commercial traffic in and out of Boston Harbor.

Police say Farmer appointed Hammond to the bookkeeper’s post so he could ensure money would go where he wanted it.

According to police, Farmer installed to captain’s chairs on his own personal vessel using BHPA funds.

The pair is charged with larceny by scheme, making false entries in corporate books and forgery, among others.

They are accused of costing the BHPA more than $180,000 with their scheme, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

The two men were released on their own recognizance Wednesday after an arraignment.
