SANDWICH, Mass. - The U.S. Coast Guard called off a search Tuesday morning after flare inicated a possible boat in distress in Cape Cod Bay.
A search was launched just before 6 p.m. Monday after the Coast Guard received word from several witnesses that flares were seen coming from a boat in distress in the waters off Sandwich.
Police later told Boston 25 News they were suspending the search and believed the flares were a false alert.
UPDATE: I just spoke with a @uscoastguard spokesperson. Coast Guard helicopter is up searching now to make sure nothing was missed during the search in the dark. Still no sightings of any boats in distress or any reports of missing boats. Source of flares unclear. #Boston25 https://t.co/3wtdtKD3a1— Michael Henrich (@MichaelHenrich) November 28, 2017
They also said there were no reports of missing boats in the area and no radio reports of requests for help.
Still, the Coast Guard said it resumed its search at first light to make sure no one was left overnight on the water in such cold temperatures.
