MENDON, Mass. — It’s that time of year again. Yes, Christmas trees are on the way and you may want to buy your tree earlier than ever. The holiday season is present, but it may be harder to find a tree to put your presents under.
Nino Lambert owns the Lambert’s in Westwood.
“There is very limited supply, especially with the height,” Lambert said.
Lamberts is getting ready to fill their greenhouse with trees in the coming weeks. One owner said this year’s batch came with some of the highest cost. On top of that, getting the trees shipped was expensive.
“Three years ago, it was $2,400. It’s over $8,000 just to get them here,” Lambert said.
Vandervalk Farm and Winery in Mendon announced they are not selling their trees this year because so many were sold last year during the height of the pandemic. We talked to the owner, Casey Vandervalk.

“You can see most of the trees are small and only a few big ones sticking up, and even the big ones are 6 feet,” Vandervalk said.
This the first time in 30 years the cut-your-own tree farm is closed.
“I could sell maybe a couple hundred trees at best, but not the thousand trees,” Vandervalk said.
The farm has enough trees; the problem is they are too short. So the goal is to take a year off so when everyone comes back next year there will be plenty of 7-8 footers.
“All the trees will put a foot on this year. At least the 6-footers will be up to 7 feet, and they’ll be happy that,” Vandervalk said.
In the spirit of giving the best advice, ours would be buying as early as you can.
“They are going to go quick, they are going to go real quick,” Lambert said.
Christmas tree experts say if you do buy early, you can put your tree in a bucket of water in a shady area in the yard and you can still put it up in the house when you want.
