NORWOOD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Flag holders were stolen from the graves of Military veterans as well as police and fire officials at a Norwood cemetery.
Dozens of bronze flag holders were taken from Highland Cemetery Thursday night, officials say. Two piles of the holders were recovered by the cemetery superintendent at 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. Friday. Police believe that the suspects were scared off, forcing them to leave the area without the two piles.
This isn't the first time thieves have targeted these flag holders. About a year ago there was a rash of thefts and police set up patrols after that. They believe the thieves take the flag holders to a local scrap yard and make some quick money.
Lt. Brian Murpy is not alone when he says people in town are very upset someone would desecrate a cemetery.
"You could spend all day looking in the thesaurus looking for the right word and on Facebook comments are despicable, horrendous, unscrupulous," Murphy said.
Fran Kenney of Norwood said, "I think it's horrible. That and the headstones, it's sad."
The flag holders are now at the police department and officers are trying to get fingerprints from them starting Monday. They say police patrols will continue, and ask anyone who saw anything to give them a call.
