Brigham doctor shot identified as heart surgeon

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Dr. Michael J. Davidson, the doctor who was shot Tuesday at Brigham and Women's Hospital and later died from his injuries, was a celebrated surgeon.

He was the director of the hospital's endovascular cardiac surgery unit, and an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.

"Dr. Davidson was a wonderful and inspiring cardiac surgeon who devoted his career to saving lives and improving the quality of life of every patient he cared for," read a statement from the hospital. "It is truly devastating that his own life was taken in this horrible manner. At this time, Dr. Davidson's family has requested privacy, and we ask for your support in honoring their request during this very difficult time."

Davidson was shot twice at around 11 a.m. Tuesday. He underwent surgery late Tuesday afternoon, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Boston police confirm Davidson was shot by 55-year-old Stephen Pasceri of Millbury. Police said a motive for the shooting was unclear as of Tuesday night. Multiple sources told FOX 25 that Davidson had treated Pasceri's mother, who died recently.
