Braintree suspect was victim in 2008 racial attack

MARSHFIELD, Mass. — The man who police said shot a Braintree officer a Motel 6 Friday night was the victim in an attack that drew national attention.

Police said that  25-year-old Tizaya Jordan Robinson shot Officer Donald Delaney when he and other officers tried to serve him a warrant on outstanding charges.

Robinson was later found in the motel room dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said police.

Back in 2008, Robinson went to a house party in Marshfield and suffered a severe beating.

According to the court documents, Robinson and two friends went to the party and while there, he and Jay Rains, who is white, got into a fight and Rains called him a racial slur multiple times, documents said. At one point, one of Robinson's friends, Joshua Wigfall, pushed Rains until he fell to the ground.

Rains continued yelling a racial slur at Robinson, documents say, and the argument continued. Other people joined in the argument and then at least five but as many as 15 began calling Robinson the racial slur repeatedly.

Robinson was walking down the driving in an attempt to leave, and as the crowd came up to him, documents say Robinson sprayed dog repellent on them. From there, the crowd "became enraged" and converged on Robinson, as several people kicked Robinson in the face and party goer Amanda Kelly jumped up and down on his head, said court documents. Kevin Shdeed struck Robinson several times and said, "I'm going to kill you," said court documents. Christopher Bratlie was also involved in the beating Robinson, says court documents.

Robinson suffered several stab wounds, nerve damage and lumps on his head. He was "lifeless" and rushed to South Shore Hospital. Officials noted that as the attack happened, no one intervened.

Amanda Kelly was convicted of, among other offenses, a violation of civil rights with bodily injury, and assault and battery for the purpose of intimidation resulting in bodily injury.  Bratlie and Shdeed were convicted of a violation of civil rights without bodily injury, and assault and battery for the purpose of intimidation without bodily injury. Bratlie also was convicted of assault and battery as a lesser included offense of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (shod foot), and assault and battery.

Their convictions were upheld by the Supreme Court in 2015 after years of appeals.

Boston 25 News is working to learn more about what happened. Robinson had a criminal history prior to the Braintree shooting.

In the Braintree incident, the officer shot has been released from the hospital and is expected to survive.
