Braintree High School basketball player hospitalized after being hit by car

A Braintree High School basketball player was hospitalized after getting hit by a car over the weekend.

The 17-year-old Braintree girls basketball captain sustained serious injuries after getting hit by a driver that hasn't been charged, and there's now concern growing that surgery could impact her basketball career.

A mother's nightmare turned real for Joanne Winter over the weekend, as her teenage daughter Jeniyah was hit by a car when crossing the street Saturday.

"I was devastated," Winter said. "I literally couldn't keep my composure. My cousin came running back to the house saying Jeniyah got hit by a car. We all ran and she was laying in the middle of the street."

Jeniyah Jones is team captain of the Braintree girls basketball team, and an all-star athlete who will be playing collegiate basketball in the fall.

She was planning on choosing which school to attend this week, and the decision is now on hold as the possibility of knee surgery puts her future on the court into question.

"She doesn't say it much, but you can tell," Winter said.

The 17-year-old was sent to the hospital with a fractured hip and torn ligaments in her knee, and Randolph Police say the driver, a 26-year-old woman, was cited for failure to stop for a pedestrian at a crosswalk.

Winter said she's frustrated, and was hoping the driver would face more serious consequences.

"That upset me a little bit to know that's all she had," Winter said.

Winter sad it's a tough time for the high school senior, but said she's kept her spirits high despite the crash.

Jeniyah also got a visit from her teammates, showing her support both on and off the court.

"She said she felt appreciated, that it was good to see them, to have all of them to come down and actually spend a few minutes with her," Winter said.

Jeniyah will return home from the hospital Wednesday and will begin physical therapy, and Winter said they're waiting to hear from doctors about what's next.
