BOSTON — Slow down when driving through Boston.
The City Council on Wednesday gave final approval to a measure that lowers the city's default speed limit from 30 to 25 miles per hour.
The measure that takes effect Jan. 9 means that drivers will not be allowed to go more than 25 miles per hour on any city street unless a different limit is posted. The law does not apply to state roads.
"It's about how to make our streets safer for pedestrians, bicyclist and vehicles. This year we have had 17 losses of life on our roads,” Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said.
The measure was proposed by Walsh, who says it will cut down on injuries and fatalities. He says his goal is to eliminate all traffic deaths in the city.

Police Commissioner William Evans approved of the measure.
