Boston Latin School students say new dress code targets females

BOSTON — A longstanding policy that's about to be enforced is causing controversy at Boston Latin School.

As of Nov. 1, students there will be expected to meet the guidelines of the school's dress code policy.

But some students tell FOX25 that the new policy it unfairly targets select groups.

The policy prohibits gang-related colors, clothing with references to drugs, alcohol, or explicit material, and see-through clothing.

Students are also required to be covered from the shoulders to four inches above their knees.

School leaders tell FOX25 the rules apply to both sexes, but some students said they believe banning tank tops, short shorts, short skirts, visible underwear, and spaghetti straps targets female students.

"I think that this is a sexist thing because people are making us women wear things that are kind of ridiculous in terms of, like, length and different things like that just so people don't get distracted while they're learning,” Greta, an 8th grade student, said.

A spokesperson for Boston Public Schools told FOX25 that a compromise has been reached.

"The policy is intended to promote a safe and respectful learning environment for all students and staff; and teaches students about expectations for appearance in professional settings,” a statement said.
