Preliminary investigation suggests the boy was the only one operating the ATV and there was no indication of any foul play involved.
The identity of the victim was not released by the DA.
This investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, the Massachusetts Environmental Police, Massachusetts State Police and Tewksbury Police.
The boy was a student at Shawsheen Tech, where grief counselors will be available on Monday to provide support for students.
Shawsheen Superintendent Tim Broadrick issued the following statement to students and staff regarding the accident:
I am sorry to have to inform you that one of our students died in a tragic ATV accident this afternoon. We are prepared to provide counseling for grieving students and staff tomorrow in Guidance. We will also have additional staff in (the student's) homeroom. Please be prepared for the possibility that some of your students and colleagues may be significantly affected.
