Accidental chimney fire caused massive blaze that destroyed historic Concord mansion

Multi-million dollar home in Concord destroyed by fire

CONCORD, Mass. — A report has found that an accidental chimney fire caused the massive blaze that destroyed a Concord mansion on Friday evening.

Just two days after Christmas, a 4-alarm fire at 240 Fairhaven Hill Road completely destroyed the historic mansion, which began in the morning and burned through the early afternoon.

Investigators determined that a fire in the fireplace extended from inside the chimney through a breach in the mortar, which allowed super-heated gases to escape and ignite the structure.

“We’re confident the fireplace was used in a correct and appropriate manner by the occupants of the home, and that this was an accident,” said Concord Fire Chief Thomas M. Judge.

According to Chief Judge, crews had trouble fighting the fire due to the limited access to water in the area, which is primarily served by private well water.

Firefighters on scene told Boston 25 News the homeowners were out of town.

Fire Companies from Concord, Lexington, Lincoln, Stow, Sudbury & Acton responded for mutual aid. Tanker trucks had to bring water down the long private road to the home.

The home has been deemed a total loss.
