73 people left jobless as American Girl closes Natick Mall store

NATICK, Mass. — The American Girl store at the Natick Mall will close on March 20, according to a statement released by the company.

“It has been our privilege to serve these communities for more than a decade, and we thank our loyal customers for their patronage and look forward to continuing our valued relation with them,” said Wade Opland, Vice President of Retail for American Girl. “While decisions that impact our associates, our customers, and the community are always difficult, the closures are a necessary step to improve the overall health of our business and reinvest in key areas of growth.”

The store employed 22 full-time employees and 51 part-time employees.

“The company is committed to treating all affected employees fairly, including offering transition assistance to eligible employees,” the statement added.

A spokesperson for the Natick Mall sent Boston 25 News the following statement:

"American Girl has been a great partner to Natick for over 10 years, and we are always sad to see tenants leave the shopping center. However, this is the nature of our business and we approach this as an opportunity to repurpose valuable space that is now available. Evolution is always top of mind as we continue to bring new uses to Natick that meet the changing needs of our shoppers. We will keep you updated on new developments as we are able."

The American Girl store at the Mall of American in Bloomington, Minnesota is also closing.

Both the Natick Mall and Mall of America stores opened in November 2008. Their leases expire this quarter.

The company has 17 other stores across the United States.
