60 pianos, 60 neighborhoods - street pianos are here

BOSTON — The street pianos are back to Boston and will available for any and all to play a little tune.

In total, there are 60 pianos across 60 neighborhoods in the city, all being installed Thursday.

The idea of the street pianos originated with a piece of art called "Play Me, I’m Yours", by British artist Luke Jerram. More than 1400 pianos have been installed in 50 cities across the globe with the invitation "Play Me, I’m Yours."

The pianos came to Boston in 2013 and were highly popular. For Boston, its music history goes back a long time; the first American piano factory once stood in the South End.

This time, the pianos will be available to play for the next three weeks and they have been decorated by local artists.

Sorin Bica is one of the 60 artists from Boston putting their mark on the pianos. Some are painted, some sketched and others colored.

"A way to hide the piano.  It's a different type of canvas, basically," Bica told FOX25.

Bica's rolling canvas ended up in the heart of Boston, inside Faneuil Hall

The pianos are part of the Celebrity Series of Boston and  push to make the arts more accessible for everyone.

"The idea is to call people toward the piano and encourage them to play," said organizer Karen Brown.

People are asked to share their experiences with the piano using the hashtag #streetpianosboston.
