A few firefighters slipped on ice, but no one was reported injured at the scene, officials told Boston 25 News.
“Believe it or not, the layer of ice on our coats gives us another layer of insulation. We’re not really getting wet from the water," Haverhill Fire Chief William Laliberty said.
It was not immediately clear how many people lived in the house. Investigators said they likely wouldn't be able to go into the home until sometime Thursday morning.
Fire officials said a pet was in the home and was unaccounted for Thursday night.
