Boston 25 Weather

Cold today, watching coastal storm

COLD AND BLUSTERY

A coastal storm will slide offshore of New England today, but we’ll still feel some of its effects — especially along the coast.

It’s a frigid start this morning with temperatures in the single digits and teens, and when you factor in the wind, it feels below zero for some spots. Winds will be a big player today, increasing through the morning with gusts 35–50 mph, and up to 60 mph on Nantucket.

We’re already seeing some ocean-effect snow showers this morning, and as the offshore storm passes by, it will help squeeze out additional light snow for the Outer Cape and Nantucket. Snow amounts stay minor — generally a coating up to 2″, with the higher end of that range on Nantucket. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect there.

Another concern today is coastal flooding, thanks to astronomically high tides combined with strong onshore winds. We’re closely watching the morning high tide around 10 AM, the evening high tide near 11 PM, and even the late-morning high tide tomorrow around 11 AM. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect through 2 PM Monday, with a Coastal Flood Warning for Nantucket, where impacts could be more significant.

Despite the sunshine trying to break through at times, highs today will only reach the mid-20s, and it will feel much colder with the wind.

THIS WEEK

Looking ahead, the good news is the rest of the week looks quiet and dry. Temperatures moderate a bit, with highs mainly in the 30s. Our next chance for snow appears late Friday into Saturday, and right now it looks light — something we’ll keep an eye on.

Stay warm and keep it tuned for updates, especially if you’re along the coast.
